Background of the Study

Music and dance serve as essential components of cultural identity in Yenagoa, weaving together historical narratives, spiritual beliefs, and social values. These art forms are not only entertainment but also a means of preserving the ancestral heritage of the people. In recent years, there has been an increased interest in understanding how modern influences and globalization affect traditional music and dance practices (Ibrahim, 2023). While some community members embrace contemporary forms as a way to keep traditions alive, others argue that the commercialization and modernization of these art forms risk diluting their cultural significance (Chukwu, 2024). The study examines how music and dance contribute to a collective sense of identity and belonging among residents of Yenagoa, while also exploring the tensions between preservation and innovation (Onyema, 2025). By integrating perspectives from cultural practitioners, scholars, and local artists, the research aims to provide a comprehensive analysis of how traditional art forms continue to evolve in the face of modernity, ensuring that cultural identity remains resilient and dynamic (Abiola, 2023).

Statement of the Problem

There is growing concern that the modernization of music and dance in Yenagoa may undermine their traditional roles in shaping cultural identity (Efe, 2023). Rapid commercialization, adoption of foreign styles, and loss of traditional techniques have raised questions about the authenticity and sustainability of local art forms. Community members and cultural experts worry that these changes could lead to a weakened cultural identity. This study aims to identify the challenges facing traditional music and dance and propose methods to reinforce their cultural significance (Omoniyi, 2024).

Objectives of the Study:

1. To analyze the influence of modern music and dance on cultural identity.

2. To document traditional practices and their evolution over time.

3. To suggest strategies for preserving authentic cultural expressions.

Research Questions:

1. How do modern influences impact traditional music and dance in Yenagoa?

2. What role do these art forms play in shaping cultural identity?

3. How can traditional practices be preserved amid modernization?

Research Hypotheses:

1. H1: Modernization significantly alters traditional music and dance forms.

2. H2: There is a positive correlation between traditional art practices and cultural identity.

3. H3: Community initiatives can successfully preserve indigenous art forms.

Significance of the Study

This research highlights the crucial role of music and dance in maintaining cultural identity. The study’s findings will inform cultural policy and community programs, ensuring that modernization does not compromise traditional heritage (Chukwu, 2024). Its insights will benefit artists, educators, and cultural managers in preserving authentic practices.

Scope and Limitations of the Study:

The study is limited to assessing the impact of music and dance on cultural identity in Yenagoa Local Government Area, Bayelsa State, with a focus on local artistic expressions.

Definitions of Terms:

• Music: Organized sound expressions that reflect cultural narratives.

• Dance: Rhythmic movement and expression conveying cultural values.

• Cultural Identity: The shared sense of belonging and heritage among community members.
